No one ever said being a satyr is easy. It’s even harder when most people only know you as the best friend to the main hero. For too long, Grover Underwood has lived in the shadow of Percy Jackson. But we’re here to remind you that Grover Underwood has always stood on his own two hooves.
Old Pro
Sure, Grover may look and act like a teenager, due to the slow aging of satyrs, but he’s actually in his early 30s. He was guiding demigods to Camp Half-Blood long before he ever met Percy. Most notably, he’s the one who led Annabeth, Thalia, and Luke to camp while they were being attacked by Hades’s forces. Thalia stayed behind to sacrifice herself, but give Grover a break, two out of three ain’t bad. Besides, we all know she came out okay in the end.
No one ever said being a satyr is easy.
True Bravery
They say true courage doesn’t come from being fearless. It comes from being able to overcome your fear. By that logic, trust us when we say that Grover has courage to spare. We could fill a whole book with all the things he has claimed to be afraid of, including monsters, spirits, cyclopses, mazes, labyrinths, Dionysus, and even cute little bunny rabbits. But to be fair, rabbits have been known to be nasty bullies to satyrs.
The Quest for Pan
When he wasn’t busy bringing new demigods to camp, Grover spent his time searching for Pan, the lost God of the Wild and lord of the satyrs. Grover was the last satyr to see to the God of the Wild before he faded away—he even inherited some of Pan’s wisdom and power.
Very Important Satyr
Following the Battle of Manhattan, Grover’s heroism was rewarded with an invitation to join the Council of Cloven Elders, Pan’s super-exclusive club of high-ranking satyrs. We’re not exactly sure how they spend most of their time now that Pan is gone, but we’re pretty certain they still meet to have enchiladas every Wednesday.
Tree Hugger
We had been concerned that Grover’s all-consuming crush on Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt, would prevent him from settling down. Then he met Juniper, a playful wood nymph who took an instant liking to him. They’ve been together for years now and have a real connection. And if he ever did something so stupid to jeopardize things? Let’s just say that a scorned wood nymph is 100 times scarier than a bunny rabbit.
Doomed to be a Sidekick?
Now with a position on the council, a healthy relationship, and a growing repertoire on the reed pipes, Grover has carved out a respectable life for himself. But his days of helping gods and demigods clean up their messes aren’t over yet. Last time we saw him, he’d been summoned by Meg McCaffrey to guide her and Apollo through the labyrinth from Indianapolis. So much for enjoying the finest tin cans Malibu has to offer.
