What level of trauma is Ascension Borgess Hospital? ›

Ascension Borgess Hospital is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care, a level II trauma center, and a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

The general acute care facility, which serves residents of southwestern Michigan, houses more than 420 beds.

Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo is among the four Ascension hospitals in Southwest Michigan that Ascension continues to retain, as two deals are pending between MyMichigan Health and Henry Ford Health for operations of Ascension's Northern and Southeast Michigan hospitals.

A Level I trauma center can provide the highest level of care for a patient presenting after a traumatic injury. A Level IV or V trauma center will stabilize an injured patient and arrange for transfer to a higher level of care. This designation is unique for adult and pediatric facilities.

The Trauma team is a multidisciplinary group of individuals drawn from the specialties of emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery, nursing, allied health and support staff, who work together as a team to assess and manage the trauma patient. Their actions are coordinated by a team leader.

The hospital has 1,011 beds and admits around 50,000 patients each year. The surgical staff performs over 34,000 operations yearly. The obstetrics service handles over 3,800 births each year.

Nonprofit hospital operator Ascension finished its 2023 fiscal year ended June 30 with a net loss of $2.7 billion and an operating loss of $3 billion. It received a negative credit outlook from two credit agencies, S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings, in October.

Ascension's absolute net debt position (long-term debt inclusive of lease liabilities, minus unrestricted cash and investments), remains one of the most favorable of any of Fitch's covered health system credits, at approximately negative $8.35 billion at FYE23, and continues to confer considerable credit strength.

The eight Ascension properties will operate under the Henry Ford Health flag; Henry Ford's president and CEO Bob Riney will remain at the head of the structure; Henry Ford will be “majority owner,” assuming “overall management of the former Ascension hospitals.”
