What kind of tires do you need?
On many retail websites, you will find a list of all the tires available in your size. However, in many cases, you will need to dig deeper to meet the speed rating. The following list can help you identify your tire type.
- All-season tires are available in S and T speed ratings. These tires are known for their good grip in all weather conditions and high mileage and usually fit conventional cars and SUVs.
These are summer tires. They can only be used in a region where there are no winters: west and south of the United States.
Many newer vehicles, especially those with an attractive appearance or improved wheels, are available with all-season tires in the H and V speed classes. They generally have better cornering grip than S and T speed index all-season tires, but the high-performance tires may not wear out as long.
- Ultra-high performance all-season and summer tires are typically available in ZR, W and Y speed ratings for sports cars and high-performance sedans. Distinguishing between all-season and summer tires can be a challenge and may require a visit to a manufacturer’s website to learn the details. A clue to distinguish them: A summer tire would not have an M&S (Mud & Snow) marking on the sidewall.
- All-season and off-road truck tires naturally come in large sizes and are designed for the towing and hauling tasks of light pickups and SUVs. All-terrain tires generally have a more aggressive tread pattern to assist traction in off-road conditions. One tip is that many all-terrain tires have “A/T” or “All Terrain” directly in the model name.
- Winter/snow tires are easily identified by a mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall of the tire. In addition, the tread looks busier than all-terrain tires with many slits called sipes. When shopping, make sure to buy winter tires in sets of four to optimize braking and handling.

What does tire wear depend on?
The life expectancy of tires varies greatly and depends on many factors, such as the original construction, driving habits, mileage, and maintenance. In general, non-specialized tires that are driven 12,000-15,000 miles a year should last three to four years, but there are big differences. Do not settle for the cheapest set and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when choosing tires. Also, choose the tires that best fit your needs. Remember, however, that no matter what you do, they will wear out eventually. Normal tire wear simply looks like evenly decreasing treads around all parts of the tire that come into contact with the ground. If the treads wear unevenly, you have a problem.
It depends on the properties of the rubber compound that makes up the tire tread and on the properties of the road on which it is moving. In the case of the tire carcass of passenger cars and trucks driving on normal roads, the wear of the tread is characterized by its abrasiveness.

How to read your tire
Have you ever wondered what all those numbers on the sidewall of your tire actually mean? You are not alone. Here is a primer on tire size and other sidewall markings that can give you valuable information about your tires.
Width in millimeters – The first of the size numbers indicates the width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters. If the number begins with a “P”, the tire is called “P-Metric” and is built in the USA. If not, the tire is a European metric tire. The only difference between the two is a very small one in terms of calculating the load capacity for the size, but the two are essentially interchangeable.
Aspect Ratio – The aspect ratio is the height of the tire, measured from the top of the rim to the top of the tire, as a percentage of the width. This means that the top sidewall of the rim in this picture is 65% of the width of 225 millimeters or 146.25 millimeters.
Diameter – This number indicates the inner diameter of the tire in inches, which is also the outer diameter of the rim. If this number is preceded by an “R”, the tire is a radial tire and not a cross-ply tire.
Load Index – This is an assigned number corresponding to the maximum permissible load the tire can carry. For the above-mentioned tire, a load index of 96 means that the tire can carry 1,565 pounds, for a total of 6260 pounds on all four tires.
Speed rating – Another assigned number corresponding to the maximum speed that the tire is expected to be able to withstand over extended periods of time A speed rating of V indicates a speed of 149 miles per hour.
Tire Identification Number – The letters DOT in front of the number indicate that the tire meets all federal standards required by the Department of Transportation. The first two numbers or letters after the DOT indicate the factory where the tire was manufactured. The next four numbers indicate the date of manufacture of the tire, i.e. the number 1210 indicates that the tire was manufactured in the 12th week of 2010.
Tire layer composition – The number of rubber and fabric plies used in the tire. The more plies, the greater the load the tire can support. It also indicates the materials used in the tire: steel, nylon, polyester, etc.
Treadwear rate – Theoretically, the higher the number here, the longer the tread should last.
Traction Level – Indicates the ability of the tire to stop on wet roads. AA is the highest grade, followed by A, B, and C.
Temperature Class – Indicates the tire’s resistance to heat accumulation when inflated correctly. The classification is A, B, and C.
Max Cold Inflation Limit – The maximum amount of air pressure that should ever and under all circ*mstances be put into the tire. This is a highly misleading figure as it is not the amount you should put in your tire.
ECE Type Approval Mark – This indicates that the tire meets the strict standards of the Economic Commission for Europe.
M+S – Indicates that the tire’s tread is optimized for both mud and snow.
Severe Service Emblem – Also known as the ‘Mountain Snowflake Symbol’ because it is an image of a snowflake being placed on a mountain. This emblem indicates that the tire meets the American and Canadian winter traction standards.
The most common mistake in the choice of off-road tires is the selection of the first available tires, based only on size and brand. However, in the choice of a car tire for off-road transport, you should take into account, almost, first of all, the purpose of a tire for this or that road surface.
Manufacturers divide the tires for off-road vehicles into four classes based on their specific use and mark them as follows: HP, HT, AT, MT.
Let’s take a closer look at each class.
HP (High Performance). This marking is not exactly intended for off-road wheels. The same markings are present on many passenger car models. Feature of the tires with such marking is high performance and the ability to develop high speed (the minimum speed index, usually H, i.e. 210 km / h). The tires are fully designed for use on asphalt pavement only. They are mounted on premium crossovers.
- For premium SUVs
- For high-speed driving up to 210 km/h
- For driving only on the asphalted qualitative surface
- In most cases an asymmetrical tread pattern

HT (half terrain, highway terrain). This marking indicates that tires can be used on asphalt roads, rough roads and on unpaved surfaces. For off-road use – not recommended. In its nature – highway tires, as can be seen from the name (highway – road). The limit speed index – S, i.e. 180 km / h.
- Highway tires for driving on asphalt and on-ground roads (to a lesser degree)
- Designed for high-speed driving up to 180 km/h
- Off-road – contraindicated

AT (all-terrain). This marking tells us that tires can be used on asphalt, unpaved roads and in the conditions of a slight off-road. As a rule, manufacturers recommend using them 50% on asphalt and 50% on ground and off-road, but different models have different recommendations (60/40, 40/60, etc.).
